Dental Check-ups and Examinations in Leigh-on-Sea

Your dental health starts with regular check-ups

At Chalkwell Dental Practice in Leigh-on-Sea, we believe that prevention is always better than cure. Regular dental check-ups are one of the most important things you can do for your long-term oral health and overall wellbeing. We recommend attending for a check-up at least every six months, or more frequently if our team advises it based on your individual needs.

We understand that some people feel anxious about visiting the dentist, which is why we do everything we can to make your appointment as comfortable and stress-free as possible. Our friendly team will take the time to listen to your concerns, answer your questions, and explain exactly what we are doing at every stage. You are always in control.

What happens during a dental examination?

During your check-up, our dentist will carry out a thorough assessment of your teeth, gums, and mouth. This includes checking for signs of tooth decay, gum disease, wear, and any other changes that may need attention. We also carry out a soft tissue examination to screen for any signs of mouth cancer, which is a simple but important part of every check-up.

Where needed, we will take digital X-rays to look at what is happening beneath the surface. Our modern digital X-ray equipment uses a very low dose of radiation and allows us to detect problems such as cavities between the teeth, bone loss, and root canal infections that would not otherwise be visible.

If we do find anything that requires treatment, we will discuss your options with you clearly and without pressure, ensuring you have all the information you need to make an informed decision. A personalised treatment plan will be provided, along with a full cost estimate before any work begins.

Seeing our hygienist alongside your check-up

Many of our patients choose to see our dental hygienist at the same time as their check-up. Our hygienist will carry out a professional clean, removing plaque and tartar from areas that regular brushing cannot reach, and give you personalised advice on the best ways to care for your teeth and gums at home. This is especially helpful for patients who are prone to gum problems or have not had a cleaning for a while.

To book your dental check-up at Chalkwell Dental Practice in Leigh-on-Sea, please call us on 01702 475065 or book online. We look forward to welcoming you.

Results of treatment vary from patient to patient. A consultation is required before any treatment can be undertaken.

How often should I have a dental check-up?

Most adults benefit from a dental check-up every six months. However, if you have a history of gum disease, are at higher risk of decay, or have other dental health concerns, your dentist may recommend more frequent visits. After your first examination, we will advise you on the recall interval that is right for you.

Children should also attend regularly from an early age. Not only does this help us monitor the development of their teeth and jaws, but it also helps them to feel comfortable at the dentist from the start, which can make a big difference throughout their lives. Find out more about our children's dentistry services.

We also offer a Denplan Care membership plan which allows you to spread the cost of your routine care over the year with convenient monthly direct debit payments. Ask our reception team for details when you call to book.

What We Check During Your Appointment

A thorough dental check-up at Chalkwell Dental Practice covers much more than a quick look at your teeth. Our dentists take a comprehensive approach to your oral health, examining all aspects of your mouth, gums and soft tissues.

During your check-up, we will:

  • Examine each tooth carefully for signs of decay, damage or wear
  • Assess the health of your gums and check for early signs of gum disease
  • Screen for oral cancer by examining your tongue, cheeks, throat and lips
  • Check your bite and jaw alignment
  • Review any existing fillings, crowns or dental work
  • Take X-rays if clinically appropriate, to detect problems not visible to the naked eye

If we identify any concerns, we will explain exactly what we have found in plain English, discuss your options, and involve you fully in any decisions about your care. There is never any pressure to proceed with treatment without giving it proper thought.

After Your Check-up

At the end of your appointment, your dentist will provide a clear summary of your oral health and any recommended next steps. You may be referred to our hygienist for a professional clean, or advised on improving your daily brushing and flossing routine.

If treatment is needed, we will discuss the options available, associated costs, and what each procedure involves, so that you can make an informed decision at your own pace. You can view our current fee guide on our Fees page.

We believe that informed patients make better decisions about their oral health. Our team is always happy to answer your questions, however small they may seem.

During your check-up, your dentist will carefully examine your teeth, gums, and soft tissues including your tongue and cheeks. They will look for signs of decay, gum disease, and oral cancer. If appropriate, X-rays may be taken to check for problems not visible to the naked eye. Your dentist will explain any findings clearly and discuss any recommended treatment options with you.

Most adults benefit from a check-up every six months, although your dentist may recommend a different interval depending on your oral health. If your teeth and gums are in excellent condition, a yearly check-up may be sufficient. Your dentist will advise you on the right frequency for your individual circumstances.

A routine dental check-up is generally comfortable and pain-free. Your dentist will examine your mouth gently, and any probing of the gums is usually only mildly uncomfortable at most. If you do experience any sensitivity or discomfort, please let your dentist know straightaway. We always want you to feel at ease during your appointment.

You are certainly not alone, and our team at Chalkwell Dental Practice is experienced in caring for nervous patients. Please let us know when you book your appointment and we will do everything we can to make you feel comfortable. We take things at your pace, explain every step before we proceed, and always welcome questions. Many patients find that once they visit, their worries are much less than they expected.

Absolutely. We warmly welcome children at Chalkwell Dental Practice and believe in introducing them to dentistry early in a positive, relaxed way. Bringing your child along to your own check-up is a great way to familiarise them with the dental environment. We offer dedicated children's dental appointments, and our team will always make younger patients feel welcome and safe.

X-rays are not always needed at every check-up. Your dentist will only recommend them when they are clinically appropriate, for example to detect decay between teeth, check the bone levels around your teeth, or monitor existing dental work. If X-rays are recommended, your dentist will explain why before proceeding.

A routine dental check-up at Chalkwell Dental Practice costs £82.00. A new patient consultation with one of our principal dentists is £140.00, or £95.00 with an associate dentist. Full details of our fees are available on our Fees page. We also offer Denplan Care membership plans, which spread the cost of routine dental care into manageable monthly payments.
